If you’ve ever asked a concrete crew why they show up before sunrise in the summer, the answer isn’t just about beating traffic. It’s about the concrete itself.

Heat speeds up the clock

Concrete cures through a chemical reaction — not by drying out — and that reaction speeds up as temperatures rise. In the Phoenix area, surface temperatures on a driveway or patio slab can climb well past the air temperature once the sun is on it directly. A pour that would have a comfortable working window in cooler weather can start setting up before it’s been properly finished.

That matters because a rushed finish is a weak finish. Trowel work, edging, and any stamped or textured pattern all have to happen inside that window. Miss it and the result can be a rougher surface, inconsistent color, or a finish that’s more prone to surface cracking down the line.

We’re on site as early as 5:00am, Monday through Saturday, specifically so forming, pouring, and finishing happen while temperatures are at their lowest for the day. It gives us a longer, more controllable window to do the work right rather than racing the sun.
